ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES AIDE II, COVINGTON OSCHNER HOUSEKEEPING:

Full-Time

Posting# 2004-37

Monday to Friday, 4:00pm-12:30am

Hours Worked (2 week period): 80

Shifts: Evenings

Location: Northshore - (Northshore Medical Center Admin.)

Special Time Requirements: Rotating Saturdays (half day)

Required Qualifications: Able to read proficiently enough to understand work schedules, policies & procedures, labels & signs; able to work on feet 100% of time; bend, stoop & kneel between 20 - 30 minutes at a time; able to lift between 40 - 50 lbs.

Duties: Clean public, patient, clinical & admin. areas; dust mop, wet mop, vacuum floor, empty & reline & wash treash containers; high dust, low dust, spot clean walls, ledges, fixtures & furniture; strip & make beds; clean restrooms. Responsible for stripping and waxing floors, as well as shampooing carpet.

Check out the first sentence of "required qualifications."
It's a shame when literacy has to be specifically mentioned as a job requirement.

Not to mention the title:

...."Environmental Services Aide"

....PC BS...

Why don't they just say:

Janitor needed. Must be semi-literate and willing to do the shit work.

What's a janitor go for in those parts? $5.50 an hour?

Something like that, yeah. Probably starts at a little less, because minimum wage is like, somewhere around $5.25 down here. Of course, being Oschner, they might pay a little more.

Everyone has access to school. There's no reason nowadays to be illiterate. Literacy should be an assumption--after all, if you can read the damned help-wanted notice, the question would be moot.

It has nothing to do with literacy in and of itself. It has to do with being able to read ENGLISH.

To Clodfobble: If you live in a country, any country, you should be able to speak their language enough to get by. You don't go to another country and expect them to accomodate you. That's why I was learning Italian. I wanted to be able to speak at least some of the language before I went. This is America. We speak English here. It is our national language. Not Spanish, Mexican, Cuban, Italian, or French. Employers should not be required to learn the language of foriegn employees.

And again, if you can read the ad, chances are, you can obviously read, and probably speak, the language to some extent.

To Glatt: Yeah, I noticed that. That's why I left it in there as it was instead of correcting it.

I just thought the whole damned thing was funny, myself.

You know that Spaniards, Cubans, and Mexicans all speak the same language right? I suppose you could argue slight dialect variations...

I personally agree that yes, you should learn the language of the country you live in, and in America, that's English (although it most certainly isn't an official language, there is no official language.) And I'm not saying that employers should be required to learn the language of foriegn employees. I just think that it's not THAT absurd to mention the reading requirement for a janitorial position. A little sad maybe, but not absurd.

The fact is that many janitorial positions don't require English, spoken or written. Perhaps you have someone reading the ad to you--how you happened to access the information is irrelevant. They don't want to bother with unqualified applicants, so it's still in their best interest to specify that they don't want applicants who can't read English, since that isn't necessarily a given for a janitorial position.

If this were a position posted for a teacher, or a doctor, or a policeman, I'd agree with you. But a janitor's a janitor, and many people will hire janitors who don't speak English.

All commercial janitorial supplies are labeled prominently in Spanish. English is secondary and much smaller print.
