Replacement Power Supply

Guys, can you steer me towards a reputable online dealer of replacement parts for crappy five year-old computers?

My HP a730n just goes "tick" when I hit the power button, and no lights or anything come on. I don't want to grab a cheap $20 power supply and have it not fit or something, so I'm looking specifically for the a730n replacement part, an ATX-300-12ZCDR.

Thanks in advance!

Your answer is found in Help, my comp is dying or dead . As that post notes, it would be a mistake to assume the power supply has failed. A supply system has numerous components. Supply is only one. Same meter also is necesary to confirm the new supply actually works. A defect new supply will still boot a computer. See Help, my comp is dying or dead on 29 Oct 2007 for further details.

I find tiger direct (www.tigerdirect.com) to have excellent prices and service. You will need at least a 300w supply.

One of the advantages to living in Chicagoland is that we have Tiger Direct, Fry's, and Micro Center stores here. So losing Circuit City won't be so bad.

We have Fry's here, too, but my wife knew of an even geekier place with just rows and rows of shelves of junk (like WallE's house) and, although I did have to send her back once to get the 24 pin power supply, sure enough when I slapped it in--my machine lit up, just like I was 99% sure it would.

Who knows, maybe the new power supply is "defective" somehow; but not according to the "my PC works again" criteria.

btw: Tiger Direct has storefronts?

In a few places.

Glad your computer is feeling better.

And what was the geekier place?

I went to the store front... it is def not for the average consumer... i.e. myself....

They literally have bins and bins of used and old parts... every kind you can imagine...

The website above doesn't do them justice...

They have old server cabinets, old imacs, emac, laptops, pc games... they even had a star trek shuttle desk top cd organizer

I'll have to see if I can take some pics for you...

It looks cool. If I ever get down your way, I'll have to stop in there.

I have a feeling I could quickly find $100 of stuff I didn't know I needed.

You've obviously never worked front-line Help Desk. Some people get positively surly when you tell them you can't pull their five-year-old file (that they had never backup up anyway) off the backup tapes.
