Forum

Tony i was wondering if you could do me a favour...A group of us here are developing a new game, from the ground up, we ahve a team of coders - mostly uni students, graphics artists etc and work is going to really start getting underway shortly, we need an online forum....Would you be willing to host one or mabye two threads on the back of cellar for us to discuss game related issues - public or private..and of course any cellar memebers would be at the top of the list for beta testers =)

The game is slightly fuutistic 1/3rd person perspective battleground. Terrain is all randomly generated around a series of themes including city. Tanks, APCs, Choppers mix with the four classes of troops. As you rise the ranks you have more nad more abilty to choose your equipemnt and weaponary from a wide arsenal. The game moves between day and night. Each type of maps system works slightly differenntly. The main open grass terrain type map would work like this: Each time has a starting base, from there they battle for contol for a large number of mini-bases dotted around the map. Unlike most projects liek tis we have the coders capable of doing all this, many have pervious experince with writing openGL code. Due to teh unique nature of the maps were taking a radical approach to other object in teh game. They are all solid models. This gives us so mcuh more flexabiltiy with textresing and design as they'll be put together in lgithwave, not some shoddy terrain editer. Player models will turn from the waist, particle based explosions etc are all on the hit list. And the code is goign ot be there soon..

I can do one of two things, and I'd like people's ideas on this. One, we could start a section for "user-hosted" forums which would be specific topics. Those sections would be moderated by the user who wants them. The section would appear below the "Cellar-related" section. The only problem is that if too many people want these sections, the front page could get pretty crowded.

Two, we can have hidden forums. These forums would be invisible to anyone not given explicit permission to see them. They would have to ask, I think; ideally we would have a setting in the control panel that lets them "subscribe" to it, but I don't remember if that's possible. (Well if it's not, it could always be coded...)

Your idea is probably better suited for the hidden forum idea because only a very small, specific number of people would be interested in it. OTOH if anyone wants to see the forum and participate, they should be able.

On the old Cellars, we always had sections for individual users, although many times those sections went unused as interest in that topic dropped off. Sometimes even the user who was responsible dropped off. They arrived, had a specific interest, decided they wanted a forum, got one, and after a month of low activity lost interest and stopped calling.

But I think people should be able to talk about whatever they want, and if I can facilitate that in any way, I will.

I don't think user-hosted forums are a bad idea. Hell, that takes me back to the days of dialing into the BBS at SEMO.

Not all users would actually host a forum. I certainly would in order to forward my grandiose plans for city council/mayor/ruler of the world...but that's another story.

Hmmm...

Well i have to agree for this, the discussion would be better closed, at least for the most part. Most of it will probably be rather technicial and you'd need a pretty acute knowledge of what were doing to make it mean anything....If your willing to host one i'd be deeply in debt to you =)

Syc you sound like your going to go on hte political warpath, you seriously going to run? After all with the backing of hte cellar you can't lose =)

Here, let me pull my best Hillary Clinton....

"I am going to decide in the near future whether I am going to consider running for public office."

Quote that.

At the moment, I'm trying to undo the damage of being out of work for 6 weeks, which should be repaired by the end of this month. After that, I'm going to investigate the realm of community activism. This is an off year for elections here in the city and state, although the gubernatorial primaries will be heating up early next year. (Not sure where I'm going on this one...I'm leading towards Rendell.) I have to make a name for myself beyond the 'net though...

Y'know, Jag, you may indeed want the forums closed, but I'm looking all around me, and I'm seeing geeks from all eras of computerdom. The Dwellars might actually be useful to you here (if you're like me, it will be the first time this board was useful for anyting, save entertainment....God(s) bless it)

Possibly, depends what level. First step is the engine itself, which will by fully GPL'd when the time coes. The game itself and netcode will be closed for security reasons. Most of the discussion will be of a technical/specific nature meaning its not much use, our coders will be talking amoungst themselves. On the other hand dwellers will be the first beta-testers =)

Depends, primarily on the city and state relationship. Philadelphia, although large (1.4 million) is in a populous state (Pennsylvania--12 million). Although most major cities get some special treatment in their respective states, most of Pennsylvania tends to lean conservative, EXCEPT in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh...and it doesn't help that Pennsylvania has a large rural population. Therefore, it becomes a bit harder for Philadelphia to throw its weight around. The only thing that helps us is that the Pennsylvania Senate majority leader (who is Republican) is from Philadelphia, although its not much help. However, it is the best interest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to appease Philadelphia to some degree, given that:

--We ARE the largest city in the state.
--We ARE the nation's fifth largest city.
--We ARE the birthplace of the US, more or less.
and most importantly...
--Thanks to the city of Philadelphia, Al Gore won this state in the 2000 election, which didn't help Governor Tom Ridge.

OK, let's do it! Anyone who wants a user-hosted forum, let me know.

You have a forum, you're listed as the host, you moderate. If you go away, the forum goes away with you unless someone else agrees to take it over.

If it's up to me, they aren't hidden, but in the case of Jag's, I will make it hidden if he wants.
