Good Looking Politicians
This isn't really about politics, but more about the people who represent politics in the US.
It's seems to be that to get into politics in the US you have to be good looking or at least not ugly. My reasoning for this is that most politicians in Australia (and maybe the UK too) seem to be sadly lacking in the looks and style department. It seems odd really considering how many good looking people there are in Australia that all the ugly ones would go into politics. Maybe all the good looking people are too busy at the beach!

They ALL suck! I'd rather have an ugly mug on someone who has intelligence, compassion and knowledge. Pretty boys/girls with vapid, greedy little minds running our country piss me right off.

Well I don't think the ugly ones are any better. lol They do all suck. I just think it's interesting, and I wonder if politics in the US is more about looks than ability or if you have to be good looking as well as capable. Like when two people apply for the same job and have identical qualifications, but one's easy on the eye and the other one is not. Who's going to get the job I wonder, and why are people programmed that way.
Must be the consumer in all of us, although Australia as usual is a bit behind.

Its all that TV coverage. Bastards have to like movie stars just to make it into the preliminaries. Goes to show how callow the American people are.

Are we all, um, talking about the same politicians? There are a whole lot of pasty fat white guys who look like they came out of the same grubworm mold.
And here is just a sampling. Maybe 'good-looking' is defined differently over there. ![]() |

If you're running for President, you gotta have the looks. But there are plenty of goofy-looking legislators.

When I hear in the news about some new guy in congress, I often say to myself "What the hell kind of name is that? I've never heard of anyone named something even remotely similar to that."
When I say this happens often, I mean often enough to trigger my spider-sense. In all other walks of life no other group of people have such a disproportionately high level of odd-seeming names. My conclusion is that these are made-up names for imaginary people that don't really exist. The world outside that which I know through direct experience is probably an elaborate hoax broadcast on television, etc. This being my conclusion, my plan of action is to dream about Jesus until he makes the pills go away.

What if someone ran with the name Jessica Cuntpunt ?
Would ya vote for her? Well wouldya? [eta] I've amused myself with that one. It's almost worth starting a sock puppet.

The legislators and senators, They all use the same ridiculous barber. Except for the president.
Now that I think about it, why does the president (whoever he is ) seem meticulously and nicely quaffed and all the underlings look like helmet heads. There's probably a secret amendment for that. :P |

I dunno. Nick Clegg is okay. His wife is hot.
And the Miliband brothers are alright in a geeky I'd-like-to-try-and-break-them way. Saw Ed Balls on TV the other day. I follow politics. I knew who he was. I can recognise his voice on the radio without hearing him introduced. But I can't remember ever seeing him before. Ewwwwww. He's not fugly - in fact he's quite reasonable looking - but he doesn't match his voice imo. Disappointed. |

Met Ed Balls once. Nice enough chap. I'd have liked to hear what he had to say when he wasn't representing the machine, so to speak.
David Milliband has a ridiculous personal charisma quotient in person. But then again, surprisingly, so did Gordon Brown. Haven't actually spoken to either of them, but saw Milliband speak at a confeence, and was at the Sheffield hustings for the Deputy Leader elections when Gordon Brown dropped in. Really didn't like where Milliband was coming from at the time. It was during that last ditch battle for the heart of the party in 2006, when it was starting to feel clear that the left had lost. So, I wasn't the most receptive audience. Even so, he can hold a stage. Verrrry slick performer. Watching him on interviews as well, he's very difficult to phase. There have been a handful of moments lately, when I've seen Ed Milliband (leader of the Labour Party and younger brother of David) and felt like he nailed the situation. But more oftne than not I have found myself wishing the elder brother had won that race. Don't much like his politics but he'd be a much more effective opposition leader imo. Here he is: ![]() Gordon Brown, again, I didn;t actually speak to, but as we were sitting back down in the foldaway-type chairs in a sports hall in Sheffield, he arrived and did a kind of meet and greet through the room as he made his way to the 'stage' area. He came quite close by where I was, and the man has serious presence and gravitas, but at the sasme time surprisingly light on his feet and good humoured. He was also very good in the Q&A session. I think he just froze up when there were cameras about. Bit of a crippling flaw for a politician though :P One thing I always liked about Brown: whatever was going on. Whether he was getting it right or tumbling down the polls, I always felt like he really cared. Like he gave a shit ye know? I didn't feel that with Blair, and I certainly don't feel it with the current leadership of either party.
