Stuff

I have found that I have accumulated a box full of old computing stuff and electronics. 2 or 3 routers, VHF radios, cell phones, cables, a ton old software programs in original packages, and more. What the hell do I do with them? The technology is a bit outdated but should be able to be used somewhere. I don't want to throw them in the trash because of the amount of money spent on them over time. Any suggestions?

It's very good, but way less fun than a homemade robot!

I didn't think they would take electronic stuff. How do you convice them that the wireless routers work? The radios the may be able to use. I think I am going to gather up the bag of cell phones and see if the women's shelter can use them, I think they take them for battered women.

Tell them not to look a gift horse in the mouth. After all, you're not selling the stuff to them.

Walk in, set the box down and say, "I've got another box in the car, be right back", then run like hell.

I like that plan. And it removes the possiblity of feeling guilty if I were to throw it in the trash. Let someone else throw it in the trash.

Oh, thanks ever so! I volunteer in a thrift shop and the amount of garbage we get is mind boggling. Apparently the poor are suposed to take anything and everything including dead cats. We bundle all that garbage up and send it to "the missions" aka the Third World. Maybe they can use your old floppies to cast spells on Child witches in Nigeria.

If you freecycle it, you just leave it on your porch, and somebody will come get it. Somebody who wants it and can presumably use it.

You join your local Freecycle online group by clicking the link above. You post a description of what you have. People will respond to you saying that they want it. You make arrangements with one of them for them to come pick it up off your porch. You make another post to Freecycle that the items have been taken. You're done.

The items don't end up in the landfill, and people who want them end up getting them. And nobody in a thrift shop has to deal with the unknown crap.

Freecycle is awesome for getting rid of stuff that really should be going in the dumpster too, like construction debris. No kidding. Tons of people wanted it.
