09/20/02: The Knights of the Magus

In 1994, I met a guy named Chris. He was tall and grubby, had tattoos, and wore an inordinate amount of necklaces. I learned later that my mom was very disturbed and frightened by his appearance. She took one look at his tatoos and decided he was "bad news". She would never dare tell me who I could and couldn't be friends with, though. So, since I didn't judge people based on their looks, I continued to bring weird (read: cool) people home with me.

Chris eventually revealed to me that he was a very powerful practitioner of witchcraft. In the spirit world, he was known by the name "Nickademus". He had just gotten out of the Navy, where he had formed a coven amongst a group of his friends. Chris knew all sorts of things about the afterlife that most people would give anything to know. In fact, it seemed that he knew everything. I considered it stroke of incredible luck that I had actually met someone who knew all the secrets of the universe.

I had never known a witch before. At first, I didn't know what to think. Weird? Strange? What is it all about? Well, it didn't take me long before I started believing everything he said. I'd like to say it took a week to convince me, but it was probably more like 2 hours.

There are usually only two factors that a person uses to determine whether something is true or not. The first is the confidence of the speaker. If you believe absolutely in your faith, others are much more likely to invest their faith as well. Second is the cool factor. Does it sound right? Is the answer what you would expect it to be? If it's a good enough story, you want to believe it. And that is usually all it takes for someone to switch sides. Chris had copious amounts of both of these. No matter what he was asked regarding the afterlife or magick, he could pop out an answer without hesitation. He was always utterly confident in his answers, and they always sounded cool and exciting.

Chris had learned magick with his friends in the Navy. One night, while they were all astrally projecting, they stumbled onto another plane of existance, and discovered that they had all been great friends in the afterlife. It seems that like spirits tend to gravitate toward one another while they're on Earth. They then formed the Knights of the Magus, a group of witches dedicated to battling demons and satanists. Chris had now moved far away from the rest of the Knights, though they still communicated through telepathy. Now he was looking to start up a local chapter of the Knights, and I was to have the honor of being its first member.

There are four types of souls: Angel, Earth Spirit, Shandaroshee, and Demon. All four soul types can be incarnated on Earth as humans. Each soul type has it's own strengths, weaknesses, and roles. Each soul type has it's own plane of existance. The Angels reside in Heaven, the Earth Spirits reside on Earth, the Shandaroshee reside in Necrala, and the Demons reside in Hell. Heaven is ruled by God, Earth is ruled by Jesus, Necrala is ruled by Nickademus, and Hell is ruled by Satan. The Shandaroshee were the grim reapers, and that's what most of us in the Knights happened to be. Nickademus was, of course, our leader.

The Knight's training is based on the idea of remembering rather than learning. When you're a spirit, you remember everything you've experienced from the beginning of creation, including all your incarnations on Earth. When you reincarnate on earth, however, you get washed in the River of Forgetfulness, and you forget everything. Our training was based on getting people to remember their psychic and magickal powers, as well as their memory of their true self. It's much easier to remember something you've forgotten than it is to learn it anew.

There was also the idea that when you're in the afterlife, you have an entirely greater personality than you do now. This is fairly logical, since you've likely had millions of years more remembered experiences in the afterlife than when you're on Earth. So, as we progressed in our training, we did past life regressions, and slowly began to uncover who we used to be. We began to emulate our true selves more often, and became different people. It was very empowering. Having millions of years worth of memories at your fingertips gives you an enormous amount of confidence.

to be continued...

You know, I think confidence was the greatest thing I took from that whole experience. I went from a very shy, depressed guy to an extremly confident, god-like being. I learned what it was like to have self-confidence for the first time. It's a pretty fucked up way to learn it, but it tasted good. I think that a person has to believe in themself, and I guess this is the only way I could do it at the time.
