She must have known---it was her daughter, too. He told her that Elisabeth had run away as a teenager, and dropped the children off because she couldn't care for them.

I don't think she knew. She may have known something was not right, but how do you suspect something like THAT?! I doubt this monster picked his wife for her intelligence.
