Anybody seen "Juno"?
My daughter (12, in 7th grade) is wanting to see Juno. ("My friend saw it, and she said it was great!!") Mrs. Dallas and I are not into the whole "protect our innocent lil flower from the evil world at all costs" kind of thing, but we also try to be discriminating about what we let the kids watch. After reading some reviews of the film, we're both on the fence. Any thoughts? (We're taking our son and a handful of friends to see Alvin and the Chipmunks--blech--for his birthday, and we told her she didn't have to go if she didn't want to... so she wants to see Juno instead. And that's Friday night!)

Disclaimer: I haven't seen it. But reading the reviews and plot summaries, it looks like I'd personally let her go see it. Especially considering the fact that if her friend has already seen it, she's going to get a blow-by-blow description if she's not allowed to, and who knows what sort of weird spin her friend might put on it.

I saw it and absolutely loved it! I think that it would be a good choice for a kid that age. It is a very good story with a very good message. Besides, it's really fun. You and your wife would probably like it too! I don't recall any swear words or not a lot of them, if you're concerned about that. I'd say let her see it.

Mr. Dallas, you probably already know about this site, but the screen-it website has reviews for parents that include detailed accounting of all the things that parents might find objectionable. Unfortunately they don't give you advice one way or the other about if a movie is worthwhile to see, they just tell you how many swear words, scary scenes, sex scenes, etc. there are.
BTW, the site is also excellent for quickly checking to see if any of your favorite stars are doing real nude scenes in a movie or are just doing a sex scene where nothing is shown. Not that I've ever used this site for that purpose. I'm just sayin'. |

I saw it and would recommend it... especially if you have not had that talk with you daughter, yet.
Some of the topics are somewhat distorted IMHO -- but that is a good place to start that dialogue.

I liked it. It's about a young girl that is a little different and in a poor situation. She's still funny and bright and pulls through with the help of her family. I think it's a positive film over-all. I think there is an excellent moral to the story....doesn't get much better for kids. There is some adult content, but nothing that a 12 year old hasn't heard of yet.
Ooooh, let her go see it (with you or your wife)!! Just be there to talk about the movie after.

I highly reccommend it! Not only is it funny and sweet and irreverent, the title song is by my favorite childhood musician, Barry Louis Polisar!
