That's really cool. I never thought some of my primate friends could be altruistic, but then again my friend Bob underneath his hard ass shell is a caring good guy.

There are more altruistic species than humans or apes. They need a definition for "truly" altruistic because I can think of people that are not even close to altruistic.

We've know forever they groom each other. Eating the bugs they pick off is certainly insufficient reward for their effort.
If they groom in order to be groomed, then they help in order to be helped.

Grooming is primate behavior, I mean look how much girls love doing each other's hair. I think it isn't for self, I think it's for the other person, at least in human culture, not sure about ape culture.

Our "kindness" is just learned, genetic, behavior. Adjustment to different variables within our social groups as the hunting groups and, later, tribes learned and grew. Interaction became complex and altruism became imperative.

Speaking for the apes, I assure you we love grooming and eating the bugs. It's our version of Nintendo.

Oooohhhh a tick... I love tha' big gray ones!
It also enforces bonding/relationships withing the group. Brushing hair is something my family does to show affection. My father and I did it with my mother when I was a child while she read and I now do it with my wife and son as they watch television. |
