Edited to Add

about editing . . . since someone mentioned all my posts are edited, I've been self-conciously noticing it. And yeah--almost all the time after I post, I re-read it, and find either an error or an additional thought. So I edit.

Now, all of a sudden I see this "ETA" pop up everywhere. ETA? I'm thinking. Estimated Time of Arrival. Nope. So, off to Urban Dictionary and I find it's Edited to Add. Okay, makes sense.

But is it important to mention that? Is it somehow important for the reader or the flow of the thread to differentiate the reason for editing? Cellar even has a reason box to fill in.

Sometimes I edit my posts lots and lots of times, to tweak what I want to say just right. Or sometimes to take back things I realize might offend some people, now that I've seen it put out there. Yeah, maybe I should do some editing beforehand, I concede that point. But I truly think forums like these are more spontaneous conversation than English composition exercises.

So, does it matter what the reason for editing is?

I edit all the time. I'll think I'm done, but then have another notion to toss in, or I couldn't think of the right word, but do just as soon as I've hit the Submit Reply button, correcting errata and typos so people won't think I'm an illiterate yutz...

I fill in the reason box depending the reason I had for editing.

On one other forum I used to visit, it became netiquette to add in your ETA reasoning....mainly because people used to throw out insults then edit them so it looked like the other person was over reacting, blah blah blah.

If I only edited for spelling, grammar or layout...I dont bother.

If I changed something drastically because it looked bitchy (mood driven) or just sounded wrong or it is a long time after posting...I will put in an explanation

Everything I post should be considered a first draft for the initial ten minutes.

(edit "write" changed to "post")

(edit2 second occurrence of "first" changed to "initial" to avoid repetition)

I think it's interesting when people put in why they edited. Specially the ones that say stuff about how they were stupid and wrong and should never have posted such tripe in the politics thread.

I rarely give a reason for editing. Unless several minutes have gone by and I am substantially altering things.

I really try hard not to edit to much for content. I do it but try to limit how much I change. If I do edit, 90% is due to a miss spelled word or change a few words to ensure that the message could not be misunderstood.

I sometimes read something back and realise it's unnecessarily confrontational/aggressive, so I rewrite to take the edge off and make it more diplomatic. I don't always mark on my reason at that point, depends on if i remember to do it or not:P
