How does psiphon work?

psiphon acts as a "web proxy" for authenticated psiphonites, retrieving requested web pages and displaying them in a user's browser. psiphon uses a secure, encrypted connection to receive web requests from the psiphonite to the psiphonode who then transports the results back to the psiphonite. There is no connection between the psiphonite and the requested website, as psiphon transparently proxies the request through the psiphonode's computer allowing the psiphonite to browse blocked websites seamlessly. I think this is a huge advancement in countering internet censorship. Some thoughts that come to mind are what the authorities in the restricted countries would do to the people using this resource. I would think they would have stricter penalties, more disappearing neighbors and family members. And also could widespread use of this lead to diplomatic problems between the restricted countries and the "free" ones for not taking action against "hacking" such as this that subverts one state's laws so openly and easily.

Only if there are routes around it. If you only have one choice of provider, and that's controlled by the government, as are all the routes in and out of the country, good luck. Even if you manage to do it, you'll probably get caught. Don't you think encrypted messages would draw attention?
