Internet2 Inks Deal to Create Optical Network

Representatives of Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Internet2 and the U.S. Energy Department's high-speed Internet network, ESnet, signed an agreement Thursday afternoon to create a superfast, nationwide optical Internet network for scientists that they hope will be online by mid-2007.

The network, to be called ESnet4, will allow two lines of communication at about 10 gigabits a second each, or about 10,000 times the speed of home broadband.

Funded by the energy department, the network will connect 100,000 scientists at more than 30 national labs and more than 18,000 researchers at other government agencies, private industry and universities, including researchers at supercomputing centers and particle accelerators. It will allow scientists around the world to share huge data sets in seconds.

Signing the agreement at the Michigan Information Technology Center in Ann Arbor were Douglas Van Houweling, chief executive officer of Internet2, and Bill Johnston, senior scientist at California's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and project manager of ESnet. U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), ranking member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, attended the signing.

Internet2, a public-private consortium to promote advanced Internet capabilities, was founded in Ann Arbor in 1996.

3 billion human lives ended on August 29th, 1997. The survivors of the nuclear fire called the war Judgment Day. They lived only to face a new nightmare: the war against the machines. The computer which controlled the machines, Skynet, sent two Terminators back through time. Their mission: to destroy the leader of the human resistance, John Connor, my son. The first Terminator was programmed to strike at me in the year 1984, before John was born. It failed. The second was set to strike at John himself when he was still a child. As before, the resistance was able to send a lone warrior, a protector for John. It was just a question of which one of them would reach him first.

Good thing. Because Academic Scientists are so fucking verbose they need that bandwidth to send around their 50 page resumes. The grandstanding and attention whoring requires hella hot air. Taking a simple idea and making it arcane and baroque is not an easy task. It takes a serious vocabulary and a lot of bull shit to reach such great levels.
