Moderator nomination thread

There should be at least two moderators so that the whole concept is spread over many people and not just one.

It doesn't take much work at all. One would be added to the list of email addresses that get notified when someone reports a post. One would remove spam and forum abuse and things like this.

Moderators can do the following:
- Edit, move, delete posts
- Edit, move, copy, open/close threads
- Post announcements (make posts "sticky" at the top of the forum)
- Ban users

They cannot:
- See real IP addresses
- See hidden user profile information

Being a moderator is more responsibility than work. In recent times we have been receiving about one spam per day and those users have to be banned and their threads removed or at least the posts removed. Sometimes users ask for specific help in editing stuff and one can certainly remove duplicate posts and merge threads that should be merged and such.

Cellar moderation is purposefully light, so there isn't a tremendous amount of actual work to do on that front, unless you have a vision of a different Cellar than the one we've arrived at so far.

So I figure there should be two, and that we should nominate and vote on them. So the floor is open to nominations and another thread will be opened for voting. We should elect our moderators, it is the only fair way to do it.

Previously nominated in PMs and the "changes" thread have been: xoxoxoBruce, wolf, SteveDallas, Lumberjim and Nothing But Net. Did I miss anyone? NBN was more interested in just the one section so I leave it to him whether he prefers to be nominated for the whole thing. If any nominees have second thoughts now is the time.

BTW I appreciate all your private messages on the subject, everything you all have said makes a lot of sense.

Would it be possible for the reported posts to go to PM instead of email, if someone is not likely to be using the same email address at different times of the day?

This does not appear to be an option.

xoxoxoBruce, wolf, SteveDallas, Lumberjim and Nothing But Net are a good group to choose from. I would be happy with any of them as mods.

I have no idea if they are interested, but I would also nominate Happy Monkey and BigV. They both are level headed and are around a lot.

Well, that lets me out. :-) I'd certainly support wolf or bruce though, even though wolf does plain-spoken crone like I do and bruce and I disagree about some political stuff. Assuming either would want the job...

I moderate some other places and it's a *hard* job...wolf has seen me do it on the RKBA-PA Yahoogroup.

The others Glatt mentions I don't think I've seen enough of to have a good opinion. I'd hope UT would maintain enough control to remove a moderator who didn't continue the usual Cellar mostly lazzez-faire philosophy.

I think there should be a term limit, but otherwise I really don't think I should override the authority of the voters. You choose them, they are your moderators, not mine.

Unless the system was being broken or being used to break the law.

Ooh, I said term limit but I really meant term of office. If someone is doing a job that the voters like, they should be able to be re-elected.

I think everyone thus far nominated would make a fine moderator and don't have anyone to add. I would just suggest that there should be a period between nominations and voting to give those nominated a chance to carefully consider whether or not they wish to accept the responsibility.

Nominees should not feel pressured into accepting the nomination and should be granted the opportunity to decline the nomination without anyone reading anything into it.

well, I think you wear the crone well maggie I haven't found you to be 'downright mean' I think cartoons are funny. * shrug* I would nominate you, Bruce,HappyMonkey any one that can put a fun spin on something is cool by me.

Re: lazzez-faire, anyone that is overly controlling, obnoxious, rude, abusive and showing more than hints of narcism is what I meant when I said diplomatic and fair. I think you can be fair if you want to be maggie
