Moderator Nomination Thread

This is part one of the moderators election. (Part two is the actual vote.)

The term of office for this election is through 1/1/2012, and the number of moderators shall remain unchanged at two.

Nominate people to be voted on in the moderators election. People nominated here will appear in the moderators vote, unless they specifically say they do not accept the nomination.

Joke nominations are discouraged, only because I can't tell whether you are joking or not.

The moderator election is not a popularity contest, and everybody hopes that losers, if there are any, do not feel discouraged about the Cellar. Moderator is a harder job than it appears, if only because people think of you differently if you are a moderator.

Nominations will close at 11:59 pm Eastern time on Jan. 5. If this is longer than appears necessary, it's only to make sure everyone gets a chance to see the thread and participate.

Nominations are open.

Understanding Bruce wants out, I nominate Glatt, Wolf, and DanaC.

I'm very flattered; but I can't put myself forward. I just can't commit to being here all the time.

I'd go for Glatt and Griff being well balanced moderate posters.
Happily vote for either if they put themselves forward.

Wolf of course MUST be retained.

I'd be up for Monnie (she loves to be called that) because although she can be a hothead I think she might balance things out nicely - although I appreciate she is currently organising enough things to make her eligible for a job running a small country.

I'd also like to suggest JimHelm. He used to be in the centre of many rows, but seems older and wiser now (sorry if this is simply a parallel to your private life). I think it might be good for him.

Okay, it's the Treehouse Club again, but you have to vote for someone you know and you read regularly, right?

I actually think Merc would make a good mod because I get the sense that he takes responsibility and commitment seriously and would not view his role as moderator as an enhanced soapbox. I think he would be able to separate his personal politics from his mod duties.
I could be wrong, I was wrong once before, that time when I thought I was wrong but it turned out I was actually right...

I agree!

and I nominate footfoot, because I don't know anyone else who can write with such eloquence and be quixotic at the same time.

I also think Merc might be good as a mod, even though he stirs shit in his posts.

So what is the main job of the Moderators these days? Is it mostly approving posts of new members? Is it deleting a lot of spam? What's the time commitment in a typical day?

I would like to nominate ZenGum, as I have great respect for him. I think Bruce is doing a fine job, and I will nominate him also.

Bruce bowed out this year (unfortunately!)

I am for Griff, Wolf, or Merc if he is up for it.

I had not thought of foot, and I concur.

This is definitely a question which needs answering, for those proposed and those proposing.

Chasing spam, approving first posts by new users, and occasionally keeping the peace ... well, not as a primary job, actually. As UT has said before, The Cellar is essentially self-moderating in that regard.

I've said No before, because I'm on a different time-frame from other posters.
But I'd be happy to be a sub-mod on GMT if it only needed me to approve first posts and and chase spam.

I would not want to be involved as a full mod because I'm too emotional.
But if the proper elected mods want some assistance in a different time-zone I would promise just to stick to approval of obviously real (or fake clever) first posts and cancel obvious fake spammers.

I accept the offer is probably not necessary, and would have to be subject to vote anyway, but I'm just putting myself forward in case.
