offtopic, (im gonna try to hijack wolfs thread here ) but is anyone here vegetarian? ive often thought about trying it out. as a lifestyle choice, not a political statement. i know i couldnt go full-on vegan, but i imagine that i could stand to eat a few more salads and a few less burgers. a few problems i see though:

1. eating out. even in todays 'enlightened' world, it seems to me that vegetatian dishes are an afterthought on most menus (monster bacon beefburger available with a bocaburger, upon request. oh! and we have dinner salad!)

2. protein. actually, i think the argument that vegetarians dont get enough protein is bullshit. there an abundance of non-meat products that contain plenty of protein. so i guess this doesnt really count as a problem.

3. i like meat. most every meal i eat is centered around some form of it. i enjoy cooking so it would be challenging teaching myself to cook differently.

4. do eggs count as animals?

Jenni is vegetarian, and was vegan for a good while. I'll now answer all of your questions.

1. Most places around here have pretty decent offerings, but I'm in the fastest growing area in the country. We also have a vegetarian restaurant that we go to that's not only great for her, but I love it as well. The food's amazing. If I were eating at Sunflower every night, I could easily be vegetarian. (Giles is here in my office and he's a big meat fan; he says "oooooh, Sunflower." It's that good.)

2. Worst case scenario: make protein shakes with bananas and milk/silk (soy milk).

3. Me too. But there is a lot of really really tasty non-meat foods. Spaghetti, pizza, Chinese... lots of good stuff.

4. No. Eggs have never been fertilized, so they're not animals.

With respect to the veg/vegan issue: (pirate away. that's how some of the more interesting discussions get going here)

I'm not one myself (take a look at your teeth. they were not designed to exclusively eat leafy green things.) but I do know several, including a full-bore vegan. It takes her extra long in the supermarket because she has to read every damn label (including on personal care products) to make sure there's not a speck of animal product or protein in there ... other than that, she's pretty nice.

One of my coworkers is a vegetarian, but he partakes of the cheese and eggs ... one fun thing about him is that no one expects him to be a veg (put him in a bear-fur vest and you'd think he was a viking berzerker). Anyway ... in addition to whatever he's eating he takes a goodly bit of vitamins. Like anything else, you have to watch what you're eating and make sure you're not missing out on anything nutrition-wise. Also, his girlfriend is what he calls a "partaker of the flesh" ... they've been together for seven years now, so it's not a point of contention in their relationship.

I could never give up beef. Pork chicken and fish I could do without but I love hamburgers and steak too much. Also growing up in a cattle producing area and living on a farm I feel too much for the farmers to quit eating beef.
I have no problems with vegetarians though, I applaud them actually for there dedication to their health, but if anyone of them tried to shove the idea of being a vegetarian down my throat I'd have to hurt them.

Another one of my coworkers has a strange rationale for some of her dietary choices. (remember, I work in a nuthouse, but this is one of my partners...)

She does not eat beef. Why, you may wonder?

It's because she likes cows. She thinks they are cute.

She stopped eating pork a couple of years ago. Why? Because she saw the movie "Babe." She thought the pig was cute and couldn't bring herself to eat anymore bacon or ham.

What's left? She still eats chicken. Her statement, "I haven't bonded with chickens yet. Once I meet one with a personality, though, I'm done."

Much as I miss hanging out with him ... I was thinking more on the order of the sense of outrage the ad campaign would have generated in him.

I had a chicken with once. Foghorn Leghorn (yea, yea - I know - he was a rooster). She was an ornery little thing. She used to meet me at the porch every evening/afternoon when I'd come home. She be out at the barn with the horses all day, and come running when she saw me pull up to the house. I found her dead on the porch one day. I think some asshole that kept horses out there decided he was tired of having her around. Damn, I loved that chicken!
