Wide screen theaters
The "I am not a nerd" thread has me all nostalgic over seeing Star Wars in its first theater run - 70mm on the extra large screen. That first shot of the battle cruiser going over gave everyone a holy-shit moment.
I also saw Jurassic Park at a big-screen theater. That was the last big-screen theater I knew of, and it was torn down not long after. I like the variety that the multiplexes give, but some movies really do deserve the larger screen.

For me it was more like, "Oh wow, that's a rather big spaceship they've got there, flying onto the screen. Yep, really nice and big. Quite large, as a matter of fact. It's big enough that OH HOLY FUCK NEVER MIND THE SHIP THAT'S CHASING IT IS 3 MILLION TIMES BIGGER."

Last week I saw Batman on an Imax theater in NYC. It is bigger than life in a way I can't describe! The beginning with the clown bank robbers crossing from building to building on a rope gave me vertigo. Batman has been showing a long time now, but the weekend viewing that I went to was sold out.
If they showed Star Wars or Aliens on Imax I could die happy.

Of course, real nerds just chuckled gently at that opening scene in Star Wars, because we know sound doesn't really travel in space. :P

Seeing regular movies in IMAX is overrated, and nowhere near as cool as the old Wide Screens. Panavision and Cinemascope were super exciting.
The only advantage I see to IMAX is that the sound system is so freaking loud, you can't hear the jerk next to you crunching on popcorn.
