Since Bush & Co's vision of our future military is so heavily dependant on satillite communication, it would make sense for him to protect them.

That's just sad. Wish we could give Bush the boot.

We can't give him the boot, BUT, in a couple of weeks we can kick him in the nuts.

Any declarations about not letting certain nations launch anything into space is a red herring for sure, but if a threatening nation launched something that could be classified as a weapon they can bet it'll be shot down. But that's nothing new, if your enemy puts a weapon into good strategic position you take it out.

Our current military (not just our future military), and by extension our national security, depends on satellite communications. I would hope that any future administration would continue to rely on the same, and not take us a few decades backwards. So, yes ... protect our satellites, protect our national interests in space.

but where do you draw the line? Is this not veiled threat to Galileo ( the proposed European GPS system) ?

One first learns some basic details. For example, significant damage from the last Shuttle flight was from what? A paint chip? Litter means space becomes too dangerous for man or satellite. Space war is akin to nuclear war on earth - makes that environment unusable. It means, for example, the space shuttle can no longer fly. Space is now so dirty that the shuttle must fly to protect its windshield as the expense of its heat tiles. Warfare means 'a so clean orbital space' has massive debris.

'Throwing out cigarette butts' as we do on earth would have massive consequences in space. And yet those who again take an 'only we have the right' attitude cannot be bothered with such details.

Second, how does one tell the difference between a weapon and other satellites? In most cases, one does not. One assumes it must be a weapon and attack it just like Iraq. Preemption - fear - justifies action?

This is just ridicules - at this point in time. A 'pre emptive' claim on space maybe? Isn't 'space' infinite? Shouldn't that mean there's enough room for everyone? I"m all for wars being held in space. That means I'll be able to sleep in peace at night...after watching the fireworks.

Why shit in your own backyard? Why not do it in someone else's solar system? Isn't that what the Bush govt is pretty famous for anyway?
