Feb 25th, 2020 : Bee-ware

Most people are aware of European Honey Bees that are so important to food production.
Also familiar with big old Bumblebees, maybe wood eating Carpenter bees, and those asshole wasps. I always see small things
that look like bees but no idea what the are, which is not surprising since we have 4,000 kinds of native bees.

Maryland Biodiversity Project (MBP) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on cataloging all the living things of Maryland. Our goal is to promote education and conservation by helping to build a vibrant nature study community. The project was started in June 2012 by Bill Hubick and Jim Brighton. Our community has cataloged over 18,000 species, including over 10,000 species with photographs, and feature the work of more than 1,000 naturalists and photographers.
Part of their goal is a 112 page Field Manual of Maryland Bees pdf you can download free.

When entertaining the neighborhood bees the conversation can get awkward when you don’t know the proper names of their
body parts. For instance you can ask a bee about it’s middle leg where you really shouldn’t ask that of the man next door.

The MBP is also cool, about using their stuff for you own project whether it be educational, scientific or just trying to get laid
by impressing someone.

Public Domain. This book is designed to be modified, extracted from, or reproduced in its entirety by any group for any reason. Multiple copies of the same book with slight variations are completely expected and acceptable. Feel free to distribute or sell as you wish. We especially encourage people to create field guides for their region. There is no need to get in touch with the Collaborative, however, we would appreciate hearing of any corrections and suggestions that will help make the identification of bees more accessible and accurate to all people. We also suggest you add our names to the acknowledgments and add yourself and your collaborators.
