I thought the whole idea was not that God needed the sheep, but that the sacrificer loved God enough to deprive himself to honor God. To put God above personal wants and needs.
I'm not promoting this practice, just trying to understand the reasoning. Oh wait...religion...reasoning.....nevermind.
