Movies shouldn't try for tidy little endings when the book is not a tidy little ending. Two examples (both happen to be Stephen King, one a great movie...the other just OK):
The Shawshank Redemption: In the short novel, we do not see that Andy actually finds Red in the end. But it's all pretty and wrapped tight in the movie.
Cujo: The kid dies in the book.
