I get paid to do that at work. At times.
If Somebody wants to trademark COKE, for example, we do a search to see if it’s available or used by somebody else. I’ve got various proprietary databases I search, but I also look up COKE domains at the big ones like .com, .net, and .org, and then summarize what I find for my report.
The attorney reviews my report and summarizes any problems, and we charge anywhere from $400-$1000 or so for that preliminary search, depending on how much time we spent on it.
No point trying to get a trademark on COKE if somebody else is already using that mark. You will be denied, or worse, sued.
