My sister had a staircase exactly like that in her old house, and instead of keeping its AWESOMENESS or even replacing it with a slightly less treacherous version she found some Craigslist crackhead "contractor" to rip it out (after being told by a couple of reputable contractors that what she wanted to do would harm the house structurally and they wouldn't do it) and ended up ruining, and then losing, her house.
She paid the "contractor" instead of her mortgage, using the logic that - yeah, nevermind. Not using any logic at all.
Not really funny, but now she's embroiled in lawsuits, trying to recover the FULL POST-REMODEL value of her house, with various insurance companies, all of which insist it was her fault. Which it was. Rarely will I agree with an insurance company, but man, stupid is as stupid does...
