A good reason for making mistakes is to learn. Learn why (and what) information sources are not credible.
Currently easy to identify are many examples of information sources that promote propaganda - deny reality. For example:

Numbers back in January made obvious that this was extremely contagious - worse than SARs. One obvious fact back then - infected people are contagious long before symptoms exist. Such little facts made the threat obvious. And were only discussed by honest information sources.
Man makes mistakes. Most learning comes from first acknowledging and then learning from those mistakes.
