I knew a prof who studied these electric catfish from Africa. The fish communicated with these low-power electric fields. No one had ever recorded them mating, so this prof and his grad student brought a bunch back, and spent a lot of time and effort simulating their habitat. The fish finally seemed ready to mate, and they had all this sophisticated electric-detection gear to record the courtship behavior.
And then the male started to sing to the female. With these low-pitched croaking sounds.
And they didn't have a tape recorder.
All the professor said was, "It's time for beer."
Rule Number One of Animal Behavior: The animal will do what it wants to do, when it wants to do it, in the manner you least expect it to.
