If they wanted to fool anyone the wouldn't paint exaggerated features in white and red.

Black face was used by white entertainers to appear as black to make comedy routines funnier because it's common knowledge blacks are buffoons. So the slapstick would be more believable than from a normal(white) person.
I think that may be it. Plus if the act happens to make some people attach the buffoonery to a particular person and that person is offended, you don't want it to be an armed white man, nor him to know what you look like.

Am I missing anything?
