That happened in Canada when the one and two dollar bills were scrapped in favor of the loonie and toonie. No one was thrilled about carrying those big, heavy suckers around. There was little reaction as prices and taxes ballooned to make the five-dollar bill the new one-dollar, and loonies/toonies became kitchen jar change.
