I'm fascinated by the idea that in this modern age, we still have bands in our armed forces. And not just a couple. There are so many military bands. And the musicians spend the lions share of their time doing music for their work instead of other stuff soldiers do.

Both our kids get music lessons, and in both cases, their teachers are musicians currently in the armed forces. They spend their days riding buses around the DC area showing up at different events to play for an hour or so and then get back on the bus and go somewhere else. They play for politicians. They play at ceremonies. They play at public concerts.

I know it started as tradition. Drummers leading the battle. Trumpets playing taps at burials. That sort of thing. But it's like the military has gotten a little too big, if it's branching out into drum line battles.

It's entertaining though. And I like it.
