Saw The Lives Of Others Saturday night. A friend had recommended it, but I had never heard of it. It's German with subtitles.

This is a very good movie. Takes place in the early '80s in East Germany. The main character is a member of the Stasi secret police. He ends up spying on a writer at the orders of a senior party official. As the film progresses, this guy grows to like the writer he is watching and he also finds out the senior party official is corrupt. He's very good at being a secret police agent, and he believes in what he does, until he realizes that his boss is corrupt. So he finds he's got some internal conflict and needs to figure out where his loyalties lie. Not going to spoil anything by telling the rest of the plot.

The excitement builds slowly at first, but it becomes a real spy thriller in the end, and you really have a hard time predicting what will happen. It's easily the best movie I've seen in months.
