Is that what they call "Alpenglow"?
I used to live near Lake Tahoe, CA, and the Sierras would do something like that at sunset, the sun would be gone but the sky would be day-glo pink, which would fade through purples into black.
When it was just the pink light, the mountains would light up and look really neat. The rock and sand is nearly white, and would really reflect the light well.
