I did hear an interview with her though and her thoughts would seem to give people wiggle room on the are you a racist question by casting
the whole thing as a caste system where folks are given expected roles which they can break out of if they happen to have the right talents. She was very thoughtful about what this means to a poor white. She mentioned that when MLK visited an untouchables school in India he was introduced as an American untouchable which apparently had quite an impact on him.
She wrote a well received book on the Great Migration a few years ago.
