June 20, 2012 - Hitchhiker

Somewhere in the Ionian Sea swims a dolphin that has survived a most unusual hitchhiker.

As a team from the Ionian Dolphin Project were watching the dolphins, one of the dolphins leapt out of the water and the researchers were able to take this amazing photo.

Later, back at the lab, after the photos were reviewed, they realized that the odd attachment to the dolphin was an octopus that had somehow gotten lodged in the dolphin's genital slit.

They don't know how this could have happened, or why, but think that the dolphin was leaping out of the water to try to dislodged the unwelcome tag-along.
