More than likely, you'd have to fail to pay for several years for
the Man 
to take the property.
Even so, I totally agree with you. No one ever
really owns anything in America, they
lease it.
This is also true with an increasing number of non-real assets. Many states have an excise tax on cars (though I wouldnt live in any of them...again).
