Most tats aren't about the design, they're event markers, sometimes bad things that you're thankful are behind you, or maybe a triumph that surprised you and floored everyone else. Like that song you've heard a zillion times but still perk up when it comes on because of the memories, it's a way-back machine.
That said, I've seen a lot of tats recently that obviously weren't thought through.
