The reality here is that we've been spoiled for too long.
In March 1981, the national average for gas was $1.417 a gallon--$2.921 a gallon in 2004 dollars. Gas prices in the US haven't kept up with inflation, so we're still paying about a dollar less than the all-time high.
Granted, I'm not happy about having to spend $20 to fill up my car, and it sucks for people who are struggling...but it could be worse.
