Detroit has habitually promised future rewards, and the UAW has always bought it. That's what damn near sunk GM, making promises then instead of funding them out of enormous profits, threw the money at stockholders to win the hearts and minds of Wall Street.
It's unusual to see such a generous nod to retirees, Ford's are not contractually obligated to include them in negotiations. However Ford is well aware that retirees, under the UAW bylaws, are allowed to vote on the contract. Historically, many of them do.
