In todays sensibilities it seems barbaric, but to be fair, what were they to do with these kids? The entire band of Chiricahua Apaches were imprisoned in Florida, should they lock up the kids too? I'm sure the Carlisle School sounded like a God send to the people who had to find a solution.
Plus it had been a long bloody struggle between the Indians and Settlers, and this marked the end. But much like the Israelis and Palestinians the butt hurt was deep. I'm sure the do gooders thought civilizing these kids would prevent future problems for the Indians and for themselves. I think it's remarkable the whole band wasn't exterminated.
