You can set up what are basically mailing lists and when you post stuff you can choose the list that gets to see it. I have a list for immediate family, one for relatives, one for hometown friends growing up, one for local friends, and finally one for everyone except 3 really annoying people (like classic). There are also the defaults of all friends and public. I mostly just use the list that excludes those 3 jerks, but all the lists have seen use. I think once you post with a particular list, it becomes the new default, so that can get confusing.
