August 11, 2012 - Cartoon from Space?

Imagine you are hiking along, headed up a hill and
when you look up you see a gigantic tissue floating
to the ground.

You close your eyes and shake your head, but when you
open them again it is still there, floating . . .

Wait, this can't be real. It certainly doesn't look real.
It looks like a drawing. How can a drawing be sitting
at top of the hill?

Quote:
As you approach, you realize it is made of metal.
It's a sculpture, made of welded and painted steel that
looks like a two dimensional cartoon drawing of a three
dimensional piece of paper ... that is three dimensional
if you get close, but looks two dimensional if you stay
at the bottom of the hill...

Well, wasn't that a nice little mind trip?

Thanks to ZenGum for sharing this post from NPR's Krulwich Wonders blog.

Presents over two hundred optical illusions that defy reality, featuring works by M.C. Escher, as well as pieces from Octavio Ocampo, Rob Gonsalves, and Andre Martins de Barros.
