Statistics are a funny thing. As something resembling a sociologist I see statistics everyday. The first thing I ask myself "What does the person/institution stand to gain by presenting these numbers?" After that it's just a chain of information back to how it was compiled and the collated.
Most people have no idea how to interpret the statistics they are given and when you apply that fact to an emotionally charged issue like this it makes it easy to use just about any statistic to your gain.
Rape is one of the most under-reported crimes. The definition of rape is also in something of a state of flux. Date rape, spouse rape, non-consensual sex while under the influence, rufies, changing your mind in the middle of the act, not everybody is on the same page as to what constitutes rape.
