My take: abolish marriage altogether, as a CIVIL process.
It's a religious ceremony. Give it back to the churches to administer.
There should be no special privileges attaching to being married ... and there are other legal forms and doctrines to establish things like inheritance, right to make medical decisions when incapacitated, etc.
