He certainly was. I've been to a fair few live stand-up gigs, but his was frakking electric. Seriously edgy. We were there on press night, 'cause J's Dad was reviewing for The Guardian. Neither I nor J had even heard of the guy, we just bumped into Les in Manchester during an arts festival and he happened to be on his way to review Bill Hicks at the beer tent.
I went on a frenzy of Bill Hicks catchup (as well as I could without the glorious youtube to help) and was gutted when he died.
What's completely terrifying is I still think of him as this middle-aged curmudgeon, but I am now older than he was :p
