white crust sounds like mineral deposits. Hard water? Try running a cycle with mineral remover or vinegar. Obviously you'd have to wait for the pump out cycle to be done, then pop it open and dump a bunch of vinegar in. That might work, it seems to work for coffee makers which are essentially dishwasher running in reverse, right?
