I've mentioned before on here a project a net-friend recently set up called TextBookStuff, a company producing audio adaptations of poetry and horror collections aimed particularly at high school/college literature students.
The first series of poetry releases and the first series of horror releases was recently completed, and has done reasonably well. But Barnaby is eager to do something a little more ambitious than just short stories and poems. There's been some discussion on the TBS website and also over at the Big Finish forums about doing longer productions of full length classics. Since TBS is a kind of side/sister project to Big Finish, it doesn't have the same level of resources and full length production (if given the full audio treatment) is a big up-front cost.
So far the model used has bene similar to Big Finish: people pre-order subscriptions for the whole season, or buy individual releases as they are published, and the pre-ordered subs essentially act as the 'proving ground' to go ahead with a production.
With a one off full length story that isn't really possible, but Barnaby and those following the project are hoping to find a way of making it work. Someone on the other forums suggested that he look at a pledging system, so that's what he's gone for.
Here's a link to the project and pledge site. It has some more details about the specific proposal, a little promo vid and pledge options.

Even if you aren't into pledging, check it out. It's a really interesting project from a very talented production crew. Worth a look.
