Or it could have been hail. We've rarely had high-atmosphere hail, or lightning. Birds fall to death in droves way more often than we have lightning or fireworks.
I mean, seriously, when is the last time you saw any birds on either New Year's Eve or Independence Day? They usually stay out of the way, right? They must sit at home grumbling about being stuck inside due to human revelry.
