I think you are right. There was a TED lecture by one of the Youtube people talking about how they are able to scan (probably similar to TinEye) videos to detect copyrighted content.

Digital rights ecosystem... blah blah blah. The good news is that at the end of the day SONY still managed to make a hijillion dollars by doing next to nothing and letting other people do their advertising for them. So that's cool.
