Menatl is the Aztec Moon Goddess, and is honored by decapitating sacrifices to offer their brains on her altar. The fresh skull is set upon a stone hollowed out to hold the neck stump, the scalp excised, and a trephine used to make a small hole. A hollowed reed is placed into the hole, swirled about a bit to loosen the brain tissues, which are then sucked out by the high priest.
The addition of some mint and a paper umbrella is what gives us what we know today as a mojito.
