I suck at monitoring mine too, was talked into the stress test thing by my trainer. I do really long intervals too, so I'm definitely not going high enough with the heart rate (I'm supposed to be at 180 something while I'm up there, fuck that) - I'm also not training for a marathon, just trying to get some exercise while watching Law & Order. I walk uphill on treadmill, set as uphill as it will go (15); 3.9 for 4 minutes then 4.2 for 6 minutes, for an hour. About twice a week I do an extra 15-30 minutes at a steady 4.
The machine says I burn about 850 calories an hour but I don't set my age/weight so it's actually a little less.
