Is it in the inner ear? Be careful of cholesteatoma. In the past, I have had two of those removed.

I had drainage a couple of months ago. It is fine now so it must have been just an ear infection. I need to go back for a follow up to make sure there is no growth. I don't think so since my ear drums can pop and that is a good sign. That is how I monitor it anyway....and clear up persistent drainage.

Those surgery's are not fun so be careful.
