What Paul Revere's night-ride -- which he got arrested by a British patrol at the end of -- prefigured was the British column going from Boston to Concord to sieze a small arsenal there. The column got most of the way to Concord against stiffening militia resistance, then pulled back and was harried just about all the way back to the safety of Boston by converging militiamen firing over stone walls at it. The whole contretemps, and some disproportionate casualties owing to the Americans' better use of cover, had the British command privately going, "Oh fuck! Won't be as easy as we'd thought... these people are serious! Who saw that coming??"
