I think the biggest thing that helped me was going on the zone diet at the same time. It did two things...1) Figuring out the diet and how to make it work for me took my total attention, so that I wasn't obsessing about cigarettes as much, and 2) The diet kept my blood sugar nicely leveled throughout the day, so that I didn't get nicotine cravings as much (I tended to smoke when I got hungry.)
I also lost two pounds that first month instead of gaining the 10 I usually did when I tried to quit before.
I have been a quitter since...its been 10 years and I never think of going back.
